Tour Tips (exclusive to Newsletter members)

This is where we expose you to all the tour tips we have for you. These you won't find in the pre-departure booklet or anywhere else on the website or in the brochure for that matter. These tips come straight from travellers that went on tour recently either customers, guides or staff. Special thanks to Tosca Korver from our operations office for these tips:
1) Buy liquid body soap, not bar soap (especially in the summer), the bar soap will melt and becomes a mess.

2) Get a pillow, if nothing else a pillow! You can buy it at arrival in South Africa for under R50, and can either give it away at the completion of your tour or use it as barter with local crafts people. Don't feel like carrying a pillow around, a sweater will be nice replacement as well.

3) Clients with long hair, bring a bandanna or head scarf. This is for the dusty Namibian roads. The dust is so fine that is settles in your hair and makes it impossible to comb out. If you put a bandanna or scarf over your head it makes it easier to handle.

4) Going on a tour in the next coming weeks and visiting one of the countries that are in rain season right now? You really should bring your raincoat! Still stubborn, like many others, and think you don't need one? Luckily you can also rent raincoats at several places, for example right before entering Victoria Falls National Park.

5) If you don’t feel like buying an expensive camera with a humungous lens, which is probably the reason for the camera being so expensive, there is still a way to get a picture of a lion hiding away about a kilometer or 2 away from you. Just bring your binoculars, put them in front of your regular (-priced) digital camera and viola there is your not so expensive lens.

6) All the trucks have been built to make traveling as comfortable as possible to every passenger on it. Though we will admit that you will have a bumpier ride if you sit in the back of the truck, so if you're fortunate enough to be one of the first to enter the truck, go sit in front! this also counts for the long legged people amongst us, there is more room to store those legs in front of the truck.

7) Bring your Ipods and MP3 players to make sure the hours on the road won't become a bore, instead of that make sure that you turn the truck into a party scene once in a while (read every other day or so).

8) Don't bring body lotion, but buy body cream, the fattiest type you can get! The conditions in winter are so dry, that the only thing that's going to stop you from getting a serious case of static electricity and very bad cracked heals is body butter.

9) Tight t-shirt tops are actually hotter than loose tops. So I advise very large t-shirts which allow some ventilation. Tight fitting tops just adds another layer of material between you and the heat with no chance at ventilation.

10) Ladies, have a French pedicure done before departure, do not use coloured nail varnish! French manicure/pedicure actually lasts for more that three weeks (average tour length) and will still look good. Colour varnish chips easily and requires a lot of maintenance.

11) Pack a nail brush, this to get the dirt out of the cracks in your skin.

12) Botswana and Zimbabwe only accept Visa cards.

13) In summer a sleeping bag can be to hot, a single bed sheet can do wonders. It's nice and cool and will keep the creepy crawlies (mosquito's) away at night.

14) A perfect tour where nothing goes wrong is always great, but a tour where something does go wrong will give you great stories to tell. So let's hope something will go wrong on your tour!

15) Bring a pen! You will have to complete border forms regularly, it will save you time if you have your own pen.

16) Bring a sewing kit, a small one. It's great for rips and tears in clothes.

17) Put away your watch. African time runs very different from any other time, so Swatch won't be able to keep track!

18) Respect the rules on personal luggage size and bags, this will prevent irritation or shortage of storage room to take place.

19) Know that things won't be like at home!

And last but not least we have two golden tips for you:

1) Read the pre-departure booklet!

2) Do not forget to bring your sense of adventure and a good mood, leave your worries at home!
