ITINERARY
Day 1: Arrival in Bamako, MALI
International flight arrives in Bamako in the evening; airport-to-hotel transfer; overnight in Bamako (Grand Hotel, or similar)
Day 2: Bamako - Mopti (640 km = 7hrs)
Drive through the heartland of Mali, following the Niger River, all the way to the port city of Mopti; lunch and sightseeing en route; dinner and overnight in Mopti (Hotel Kanaga, or similar)

Day 3: Mopti / Niger River
Mopti city tour: visit the famous Sudanese-style mud brick mosque, the river port, the busy local market - shop for gold or silver jewelry, hand-made cotton or wool blankets, or some of Mali's beautiful wood carvings (masks, statues, etc.); end your day with a relaxing sunset sail on the Niger River in a traditional riverboat; overnight in Mopti (Hotel Kanaga, or similar)

Day 4: Mopti - Djenne (130 km = 1hr) - Dogon country (230 km = 3hrs)
Excursion to Djenne: see the magnificent Great Mosque, the world's largest mud brick structure, and one of Unesco's World Heritage sites, orginally constructed in teh XIIIth century; continue on to fascinating Dogon country; visit the beautiful Dogon village Songo, on the dogon plateau; see its world-renowned rock paintings and circumcision grotto; continue to the escarpment, and overnight in Sangha (Hotel Campement Guina, or similar) with Breakfast
Day 5: Dogon country - Segou (505 km = 6hrs)
Visit Sangha, Ogols and Bongo; see the traditional women's house, the fetish altar of the Hogon (the Dogon people's traditional and religious leader); visit a Dogon seer; optional hike down the Bandiagara Escarpment to the village Banani; then depart Dogon country and drive to Segou; overnight in Segou (Hotel Independance, or similar)

Day 6: Segou - Bamako (235 km = 3hrs) - final departure
Tour of Segou, Mali's second largest city and former colonial capital; also visit Sekoro village, ancient capital of the Bambara kingdom, now just a sleepy village on the river; see the tomb of King Biton Coulibaly; return drive to Bamako; Bamako city tour (as time permits): visit the National Museum, the city market, the artisans' village; in the evening, transfer to the airport for your final departure with Breakfast

NB: Day-room is optional in Bamako on Day 6, for a slight additional cost; please specify if you would like to include a day-room.
